Michael Koplove

Koplove, a relief pitcher, was brought to the majors by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001, the year they captured the World Series over the New York Yankees. According to the Jewish Sports Review (July/August 2002 issue), Koplove's father is Jewish, but he practices his mother's Christian faith.

Birth and Death Dates:
b. August 30, 1976

Career Highlights:
Before playing professionally, Koplove played at Northwestern University and the University of Delaware as both a starting pitcher and shortstop. He transfered to Delaware when Northwestern wanted him to pitch exclusively; in 1998, he helped lead the Blue Hens to the College World Series by winning the America East Conference. That year, Mike went 5-1 with a 4.60 ERA and hit .221 (19-86) while playing both positions.

In 1998, following his junior year, Koplove was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 29th round of the Amateur Draft and signed with team. He spent 1999 with the South Bend Silver Hawks and was used as a relief pitcher. He said of the move, "I've always played shortstop, since I was five years old playing tee-ball. My dad would hit me thousands of grounders a day...I could never really hit that well...I pitched about a game a week in college. I kind of figured if I'd be picked up it would be as a pitcher...I went right to the bullpen. I imagine that's where I'll stay."

In 2001, Koplove has pitched for three different clubs in the Arizona system, including the Diamondbacks. After starting the season at AA El Paso, where he went 3-2 with a 2.66 ERA, Mike was promoted to AAA Tucson and went 4-1 with a 2.82 ERA and 9 saves in 17 games. On September 1, Arizona called Kolpove up to solidify their bullpen in the final month of the season. He appeared in nine games for Arizona with a record of 0-1 and a 3.60 ERA in 10.0 innings (with 9 walks and 14 strikeouts); opponents hit only .211 against him.
