Mantel was a backup guard and one of only four seniors on the 1959 Louisville team that made the school's first-ever Final Four appearance. One of his teammates that year was All-America Don Goldstein.

Career Highlights:
In 1959, Mantel was a member of Louisville's first-ever Final Four team. Alex played in 15 games and averaged 2.3 points and 0.7 rebounds per game. The Cardinals ended the season with a record of 16-10 and received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Led by All-America Don Goldstein, they defeated Eastern Kentucky, 77-63, in the first round and then pulled off one of the biggest upsets in NCAA tournament history when they defeated No. 2 Kentucky, 76-61. Louisville went on to beat Michigan State, 88-81, to win the Mideast Regional and advance to the Final Four. In the national semifinals, Louisville lost, 94-79, to Jerry West and West Virginia; and in the third place game, they lost, 98-85, to the Oscar Robertson-led Cincinnati Bearcats. In the tournament, Mantel only played in the third place game but did not score.
