Sandak, Jack

Sandak played at CCNY (City College of New York) in the late 1920s under legendary head coach, Nat Holman.

Birth and Death Dates:
unknown

Career Highlights:
Sandak began his varsity career at CCNY in 1927-28 as a backup guard. Along with sophomore sensation Lou Spindell, junior forward Sam Liss, and senior captain Hick Rubenstein, Sandak helped the Beavers finish the season with a record of 11-4. That year, they lost three of their first four games, but then rebounded to win 10 of the next 11.

During the season, Sandak played the hero in an improbable win over a powerful Fordham squad. In what was considered the greatest upset in the school's history over Fordham's most powerful team, City found themselves behind, 24-12, with less than eight minutes remaining (at this time, there was a running clock). Then, "...[coach Nat] Holman substituted Sandak for Spindell...suddenly and for no visible reason, things began to happen...Fordham began to panic..." Sandak hit three long shots (each from about 25 feet out) and City pulled out the victory, 26-25.

The following season, Sandak stepped into the starting line-up as a forward. The Beavers won five of their first six games, including a 41-17 mauling of Washington & Jefferson; Sandak scored five points in that game. They struggled in the middle of the season, though, and finished the season with a record of 9-5.
