A featherweight in the 1920s, Cohen was a top contender by the end of the decade. In 1928, he lost a ten-round decision to Battling Battalino twice in the span of two months. Both fights took place in Battalino's hometown of New Haven and he defeated Cohen both times -- the first fight was an eight-round decision and the second fight was a ten-round decision. Within a year of the second fight, Battalino was the world featherweight champion.

On November 20, 1928, five days after his second fight with Battalino, Cohen fought another top contender, Joey Scalfaro. He lost a ten-round decision. The following year, he fought Hall of Famer Kid Chocolate, the future world featherweight the junior lightweight champion. Cohen lasted the entire bout again, but lost another ten-round decision. He continued to fight the top boxers around and in 1930, he faced Panama Al Brown, the world bantamweight champ. Brown knocked out Cohen in the first-round.
