Career Highlights:
Born in the Astoria section of Queens, Portney turned professional as a light-heavyweight after winning the Golden Gloves title. In October 1932, he knocked out Tony Cappa in the first-round of their bout despite being outweighed by 15-pounds. The following month, he knocked out Larry Fagan in the third-round. In December 1932, Portney knocked out his third consecutive opponent -- Olaf Herset 80 seconds into the fight. In July 1933, he fought the toughest opponent of his career, Bob Olin, the future world light-heavyweight champion. The bout took place at Coney Island and Olin emerged victorious in a ten-round decision.
