Gideon Damti

Damti was one of the greatest scorers in Israeli soccer history. Between 1971-1981, Gidi appeared in 43 full FIFA international games (the Olympics are not considered full caps) and scored 13 goals. He also scored 142 goals in 516 career Israel League goals.

After retiring as a player, Gideon turned to coaching. During the 2000-2001 season, Damti was the assistant coach of Maccabi Netanya; he then led Netanya in 2001-02, but was not retained after the season.

Career Highlights:
Gidi was a member of the team that reached the finals at the 1974 Asian Cup (they lost to Iran 1-0). He also helped Israel qualify for the 1976 Olympics with two goals against South Korea in the final decider. Damti then played on the Olympic team, appearing in every minute of the tournament, and helped his squad reach the quarterfinals to finish fifth overall. In the preliminary games, Israel drew with Guatemala, 0-0, Mexico, 2-2, and France, 1-1.They finished second in the group to France with three points, to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinal match, Damti once again started up front, but Brazil defeated Israel, 4-1.
