Lander, Eddie

A lightweight from Chicago, Lander fought professionally in the 1930s and 1940s.

Birth and Death Dates:
b. November 9, 1920

Career Highlights:
Lander began his professional career in the late 1930s in his hometown of Chicago. In the early stages of his career, he won more bouts than he lost, but did not fight anyone of repute. In February 1939, however, he fought Frankie "Kid" Covelli, an excellent featherweight from Brooklyn. The bout, which took place in Chicago, ended in an eight-round draw. The two boxers had a rematch six months later and Lander lost a ten-round decision.

Soon after the second fight with Covelli, Lander went to New Orleans. He split decisions with Jimmy Perrin and then returned to Chicago. In April 1940, he fought Covelli for a third time and again lost a ten-round decision. The following month, Lander went back to New Orleans and lost a ten-round decision to Bobby Ruffin. After winning a couple of fights in Philadelphia later in the year, Lander went to New Orleans again and avenged his loss to Ruffin by winning a ten-round decision.

Upon Lander's return to Chicago, he fought Andy Canal and knocked his opponent out in the first-round. He won a few more fights and then knocked out Ray Isaacs in Billings, Montana in October 1941. Lander continued to box professionally throughout the 1940s, mostly in Chicago, although he spent three years in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. Upon his return to the ring following his military service, Lander won a number of fights, but lost to Canadian welterweight champion Dave Castilloux in Fevruary 1946 and then lost a ten-round decision to future NBA world welterweight champion Johnny Bratton in September 1946. Lander's last recorded fight was in October 1948, when he lost an eight-round decision to Del Flanagan.
